BE Inquisitive - Curiosity, Learning, and Exceptional Leadership
Welcome to another exciting edition of our newsletter series, where we explore the "5 BE's" principles that can transform your personal and professional life. Today, we dive into the third Be: BE Inquisitive.
The Power of Curiosity, Learning, and Exceptional Leadership
In a world full of information and rapid change, being inquisitive is a valuable trait that drives innovation and growth. Curiosity is the spark that ignites innovation, fosters growth, and opens doors to new possibilities. BE Inquisitive is not only about asking questions but also about continuous learning and its role in exceptional leadership.
Key Takeaways:
Embracing Knowledge Seeking: Discover why inquisitive individuals are perpetual learners. They seek knowledge with an open mind, absorb diverse perspectives, and embrace continuous learning. Being a knowledge seeker is paramount in the quest for the next breakthrough.
The Art of Asking the Right Questions: Learn how to ask the right questions. Just like a college classmate with the innate ability to ask the professor the right question, it's about seeking guidance, understanding, and solutions by daring to inquire.
Courageous Inquiry: Explore the courage it takes to ask important questions. In moments when an obscure acronym mystifies a room, be the one with the courage to raise your hand. Your bravery can illuminate the path for everyone.
Exceptional Leadership Through Curiosity and Learning
Exceptional leaders understand the profound connection between curiosity, learning, and exceptional leadership. They encourage a culture of inquisitiveness and continuous growth. Here are two examples:
Satya Nadella: As CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella epitomizes exceptional leadership through curiosity and learning. Taking charge when Microsoft faced challenges in a rapidly evolving tech landscape, Nadella fostered a culture of innovation, emphasizing a growth mindset, continuous learning, and exploration of new technologies and markets. Under his leadership, Microsoft embraced cloud computing, AI, and open-source technologies, propelling the company to the forefront of the tech industry once more. Notably, Microsoft's market share has soared since Nadella took on his role, with the company's market capitalization growing by over $2 trillion.
Angela Ahrendts: Former Senior Vice President of Retail at Apple Angela Ahrendts is another exceptional leader who values inquisitiveness. She transformed Apple's retail stores into dynamic and engaging spaces by encouraging curiosity among both employees and customers. Her leadership style centered on the idea that learning and growth are essential for success. Apple's retail revenues soared to new heights during Ahrendts' tenure, with the company's retail sales hitting over $70 billion in 2019.
Story Time
In this edition's "Story Time" section, we share an inspiring narrative from my own experience, highlighting the power of curiosity from an exceptional leader:
"When I served as chief of staff for the President of Business Development, I witnessed firsthand how curiosity could change perspectives and outcomes. We had just completed a $32 billion acquisition, which was at the time the largest in aerospace history. It was our first meeting with a critical international customer responsible for a half-billion-dollar account. Unbeknownst to us, this customer was extremely dissatisfied with our delivery schedule, and the meeting began on a rocky note with justifiable criticism.
I watched in awe as our leader skillfully harnessed the power of curiosity. He delved into the intricacies of our product and how the customer intended to implement it on their new platform. By challenging the assumptions underlying their intentions, he managed to guide the discussion towards updating the requirements. This pivotal shift allowed us to deliver the product on time and satisfy the customer.
That moment taught me that being inquisitive isn't just about seeking knowledge; it's about having the courage to challenge the status quo, ask the right questions, and drive innovation. This trait sets exceptional leaders apart, and I strive to embrace it every day.
This story exemplifies how embracing curiosity and asking the right questions can lead to transformative outcomes in both personal and professional endeavors.
