The Waiting Room:
Progress Without Proof
One of the most frustrating parts of any journey is working hard without seeing immediate results.
You prepare for the interview.
You make the networking call.
You launch the business.
You invest in your health.
You mentor others.
You build relationships.
You serve your community.
And then...
Nothing.
Or at least, nothing you can measure.
For high achievers, that's uncomfortable.
We're conditioned to believe that effort should produce immediate evidence.
But some of the most meaningful growth happens long before there's anything to celebrate.
Several years ago, I learned about the Chinese bamboo tree.
For years after it's planted, very little appears above the ground.
Someone walking by might assume nothing is happening.
No visible growth.
No impressive results.
No evidence that the work is paying off.
Yet beneath the surface, something remarkable is taking place.
An extensive root system is developing—strong enough to support rapid growth when the time is right.
Then seemingly overnight, the bamboo shoots upward.
The growth wasn't sudden.
It was simply the first visible evidence of years of invisible preparation.
Leadership works much the same way.
I've experienced seasons where it felt like every conversation led nowhere.
Every proposal stalled.
Every opportunity took longer than expected.
Every investment of time seemed invisible.
Looking back, those weren't unproductive seasons.
They were foundational seasons.
Relationships were being built.
Trust was being established.
Perspective was being shaped.
Character was being strengthened.
The roots were growing.
Social media has trained us to celebrate visible success.
Promotions.
Awards.
Announcements.
New titles.
Big wins.
What it rarely shows are the years that came before.
The preparation.
The setbacks.
The quiet mornings.
The difficult conversations.
The countless moments when someone chose to continue without applause.
Those are the moments that matter.
One of the greatest temptations in the waiting room is to abandon the process because the progress isn't obvious.
I've been there.
Maybe you have too.
The challenge is remembering that visibility and value are not the same thing.
Some of the most valuable work you'll ever do will never make headlines.
But it will shape the person who is ready when the opportunity finally arrives.
Today, I've learned to celebrate different metrics.
Am I becoming wiser?
Am I becoming more patient?
Am I building stronger relationships?
Am I preparing well?
Am I becoming someone others can trust?
Those are forms of progress.
Even if they don't fit neatly into a dashboard.
Reflection
Think about an area where you feel discouraged.
Now ask yourself:
What roots might be growing beneath the surface?
Am I measuring progress by the right standard?
What invisible work will eventually become visible?
What would happen if I trusted the process just a little longer?
